Mold & The Indoor Environment


Course Description - This program provides facts and myths relating to mildew, mold and moisture problems in the indoor environment. Issues relating to construction methods, safety precautions, personal protective equipment, insulation issues, mold remediation and moisture elimination are discussed.

Overall Goal - Improve the skills of attendees so that they may adequately assess potential problems relating to moisture and mold. Provide a safe work environment if microbials are encountered and require remediation. Provide information on how to respond to moisture and mold problems if they do appear. Set guidelines for assessment, recommendations and remediation.

Objectives and Purpose – Upon completion of this program the participants will be able to: • Identify the relationship between dew-point relative humidity & condensation • Identify the causes of moisture and mold growth within a residence or building • Assess and identify Indoor air quality concerns and successfully communicate this information • Identify mold sources and respond correctly and within established guidelines • Perform Level 1 to Level 3 Remediation • Use recommended Personal Protective Equipment • Make recommendations to occupants on eliminating moisture sources • Respond to questions and issues regarding mold, moisture and the indoor environment

Method of Presentation – A variety of training methods are used for presenting the material listed. These include the following: • Lecture / Facilitation – Attendees are lead to participate in various discussions, presentations and sharing of information and experiences • Powerpoint presentation – Illustration of pictures, documents and graphics relating to the subject • Group discussions and presentations – Attendees are encouraged to discuss issues • Quizzes – After each section, attendees receive written questions and respond to them • Handouts – Handouts are used extensively to support the lecture and also allowing for take-home information

Method of Evaluation – Each segment will be completed with a short quiz. At the end of the program, participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the overall program.

Qualification of Instructor – Frank Besednjak has presented Indoor Air Quality continuing education classes for contractors in the States of Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama and Georgia for the past 4 years. His programs have consistently received excellent ratings and continue to be known as one of the best continuing education seminars available. Besednjak has presented and attended numerous workshops an Indoor Air Quality, Mold Facts & Myths and Mold Assessment. He is a member of the Indoor Air Quality Association and is Certified as an Indoor Environmental Consultant.

Frank Besednjak has been involved in the education of skilled trades individuals since 1988. He has designed, developed and presented various technical programs from job safety basics to Building Code requirements.
